With 7% of the world population, Buddhism is the world’s fifth-largest religion. The five largest blocs of followers are in:

  • China – 197 million (38% of all Buddhism)
  • Japan – 85 million (16% of all Buddhism)
  • Thailand – 60 million (11% of all Buddhism)
  • Vietnam – 50 million (10% of all Buddhism)
  • Myanmar (Burma) – 43 million (8% of all Buddhism)

These five countries represent almost 85% of the total followers of Buddhism.
